About The Pilot

CRJ Flight DeckAirline Blogger is an inside view into the world of US Airline operations.

The airline industry is full of questions:

How experienced is my pilot?

Why do my bags get lost?

Where do I go if I miss my flight?

To most travelers, the answers to these questions and many more are lost in the sea of rules, regulations, and fine print found everywhere an airline does business.  I am here to unravel that endless string of questions and provide insight into an industry very few ever see inside.

Who am I?  Why am I qualified to give this type of information?

I am an airline insider.  My experience with aviation and my curiosity with the industry started 20 years ago.  Most of my life has been spent as a major airline pilot, but that’s not all I’ve done.  I have worked loading bags on the ramp, taking customer reservations in person and on the phone, at the customer service counter checking in passengers, in dispatch supervising flight following, as a flight instructor teaching new and experienced pilots new skills, charter pilot in paradise, as an aerial survey pilot plotting emergency response, and airline pilot with some of the largest airlines in the world.  Throughout all of this, I have closely worked with many major air traffic control facilities throughout the nation, coordinating airspace use, and learning about how air traffic control systems operate.

My formal education includes both flight and air traffic control disciplines.  During my career I have started multiple companies from the ground up, learning all aspects of business development and management.  Above all, my greatest accomplishment is having had the privilege of leading troops in combat as a member of the United States Army.

My primary focus and concern is safety.  I have lost very close friends due to FAA inaction, airline complacency, and failed training.  The airline crew is the primary point of safety, professionalism, and competency in aviation.  Too much emphasis has been placed on those who have never set foot in a cockpit.  I am here to bring you the real working professional side of the story.

I have very strong opinions.  The stories posted are not all about just the news.  They are a mix of news, opinion, and stories of flying the line.

I hope you enjoy.
